BINIBINING PHILIPPINE CENTENNIAL USA BEAUTY PAGEANT
Most appropriately, on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1998,
the Philippine Centennial Movement's Missouri Chapter marked
the beginning of the Philippine Centennial celebrations in
the State of Missouri with a Binibining Philippine
Centennial USA Beauty Pageant Presentation by the PCM-USA
Missouri Chapter at the Holiday Inn Westport in St. Louis,
Missouri.
The pageant, according to Mario C. Borlongan, organizer and
national coordinator of the Binibining Philippine Centennial
USA, is "one of many similar pageants staged throughout the
United States in search for candidates who best exemplify
the virtue, beauty, charm and intelligence of our modern-day
Filipina."
The nationwide search will culminate in Las Vegas, Nevada
May 17, 1998 when some twenty-five contestants will compete
for four slots to proudly represent the United States as
semi-finalists in the Miss Philippine Centennial
International Beauty Pageant in the Philippines June 1998.
Under the guidance of PCM-Missouri Chapter chairman Jess E.
Gesmundo and co-chairs Doy Campos and Raymond Lord, the
pageant show went smoothly, emceed by lovely
Victoria Recano,
a Filipino American TV reporter in the St. Louis, Missouri
area.
Among those who competed for the title were Joan Antang,
Annabelle Ballon, Leslie Martin Doran, Cynthia Keethler and
Kathy Mariano. Joan, daughter of Severino and Nenita Antang,
works with Watlow Electric Company and plans to pursue a
degree in business administration while Annabelle, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Vince Ballon and who hails from Calbayog,
Samar in the Philippines, works as a manager in a St. Louis,
Missouri restaurant and plans to be a nurse.
Leslie, daughter of Sunny and Mila Doran, is a licensed
practical nurse pursuing an Associate degree in Nursing. She
is on the Dean's list, a member of her school's Honor
Society and is the recipient of special awards for academic
excellence. Cynthia, daughter of Gary and Susan Keethler, is
a high school senior who hopes to be a good journalist and
Kathy, daughter of Dr. Alex and Susan Mariano is pursuing a
Nursing degree with a minor in Music, and is a recipient of
various scholarly and extracurricular activity awards.
Congratulations are very much deserved by all the
contestants who performed very well during the competition.
But our best wishes goes to Leslie Martin Doran who won the
title, climaxed by her beautiful rendition of a lovely song.
She will be vying for one of four semifinalist slots come
May in Las Vegas, Nevada, enriched by her winnings of
$1000.00, plus a round-trip ticket and hotel accommodations
when she goes to Las Vegas.
