HEADLINE: GROUP SEEKS MONEY FOR YOUTH AWARDS
BODY:
An organization that encourages young people to volunteer
needs some volunteer help itself. The Missouri Congressional
Awards Council has bestowed awards on high school and
college students for community service and personal
development for six years. But it may not be able to hand
out awards next year if it can't find new corporate backing,
organizers say. ''All our funding must come from the private
sector,'' said Roy E. Saunders, president of the council.
''We get no money from the government - purposely, so that
the medals cannot become a partisan thing.'' Saunders, vice
president of Gannett Outdoor Advertising Co., said the
council would invite area corporate and business leaders to
a meeting at the Arena Club early next year to contribute to
next year's awards program. Saunders said that at least
$25,000 was needed to finance the next awards program and
that organizers would like to build a reserve of about $125,
000. The first six awards programs were financed by $75,000
raised by St. Louis businesses. A record number of 77 gold,
silver and bronze medals authorized by Congress were awarded
Monday at a lunch at the Marriott Pavilion Hotel here. The
program is co-sponsored by the Advertising Club of Greater
St. Louis. Sixty high school students received bronze medals
for 200 or more hours of volunteer service to the community
and for personal achievement and physical fitness. Sixteen
were awarded silver medals for 400 or more hours. One gold
medal was awarded for 800 hours of community service. A
bronze-medal winner, Chris Cullen, 17, said, ''I feel that
through my activities, I have developed a lot more
self-confidence and that I can do what I set out to do.''
Cullen is a senior at Nerinx Hall High School. ''I'm looking
at colleges now, and they usually look for students who are
active in their communities.'' Cullen, who plans to be a
pediatrician, has worked as an activities coordinator at
Manor Grove retirement home in Kirkwood and in the emergency
room at St. Mary's Health Center.
